Head west though the Auckland suburbs and visit
the Waitakere Ranges, a fringe of hills separating Auckland from
its rugged west coast. The lush rainforest here contains a huge
diversity of flora, including the magnificent kauri tree, found
only in northern New Zealand. This tree can live for 2,000 years
and is remarkable for the quality of its timber and its size. Your
experienced eco-guide leads you on an easy one-hour walk past nikau
palms, giant ferns and ancient trees in this area of original forest
and will introduce you to some of the more fascinating aspects of
our flora and fauna.
Then
its on to Kumeu Wine Country, the first commercial wine growing
area in New Zealand and is still known as one of the best. It is
home to a number of wine makers, large and small, and produces a
wide range of wine styles. Visit 2 award-winning wineries to sample
their speciality. Leaving the winery, travel through a mixed farming
area towards the Tasman Sea coast at Muriwai. Above the black sand
Muriwai Beach hundreds of gannets return each year to build their
nests and raise their chicks. See (and smell) their fascinating
behaviour from a close vantage point without disturbing their environment.
There are only a few other places in the world that these large
sea birds nest on the mainland. A 40 minute drive takes us back
to the city.
Gannets
are available September to April only.
12.30pm - 6.30pm
$780 for up to 5 people including GST, refreshments and wine-tasting.
$150
per person for extra passengers.

See
for yourself the natural wonders of the Rotorua region that have
made it New Zealand’s number one tourist destination since
colonial times. The tour heads south out of Auckland, and through
some of the nation’s most prosperous dairy country. After
a drive of about 2 hours, there is a stop for refreshments before
continuing on to Rotorua to arrive in good time for the world famous
farm show at the Agrodome. New Zealand’s economy is still
largely centred on pastoral agriculture, and this shows give a great
insight into NZ farming life – working sheep dogs, sheep shearing
and the children may even have a chance to feed a lamb from a baby’s
bottle. After the show, it is time for lunch, either here or in
town. The afternoon starts with the guided tour of the Te Puia thermal
area. The geysers, bubbling mud pools, hot springs, fumaroles and
coloured silica deposits hint at the area’s violent volcanic
past. Rotorua is the most important centre for Maori culture, there
is nowhere better to see the traditional arts (including weaving
and wood-carving) and performances of song and dance.
Finally
proceed to the wonderful wildlife park, Rainbow Springs. Here there
are trout in abundance and native birds, including our nocturnal,
flightless national icon, the kiwi.
7.30am
-6.30pm
$1050 for up to 5 people including GST and refreshments. $210 per
person for extra passengers.
Meals and entry fees are not included.
